What is Laser Cutting technology?

Laser Cutting is a method for transforming a 2D file into a physical object. This technology can be performed on different materials such as plastic, wood, cardboard, but also some metals* such as titanium, aluminum or stainless steel. Laser Cutting involves cutting the material with a highly accurate laser that focuses on a small area of material. The laser beam is directed to the material where it need to be cut. It can cut it with a thickness up to 10mm. There are different types of lasers which can be pulsed or continuous. At Sculpteo we use continuous laser cutters that can cut all types of materials with a higher speed than the pulsed laser cutters can.

Laser Cutting is possible by creating a 2D vector file. You can create 2D files through vector graphics software. This file provides information to the laser cutter that will cut the material chosen. It is not necessary to have strong skills in design to use Laser Cutting.

Why choose Laser Cutting?

Laser cutting is particularly effective and presents strong advantages in many areas where rapid production or the creation of quick prototypes is essential,  It’s easy to cut accurately in many materials where traditional manufacturing methods are inefficient. Limitations and constraints imposed by traditional manufacturing processes are removed through Laser Cutting, which allows freedom of design and quantities.

This laser technology is versatile and offering a great level of reliability. However, we recommend you checking out the design guidelines of the laser cutting material you want to use.

Keep in mind that during the laser cutting process, the laser burns away a portion of material when it cuts through. This is known as the laser kerf and should be taken into account for your laser cutting projects !
